Informations biographiques

Il fut juge de paix & au tournant de siècle il enseignait à l'école de Boudreau Office au coin du chemin Ohio, pour le salaire de 150$ par an. (Les Bat anc de la R. Rouge, p.109). Born on December 3rd, 1855, the deceased following his early education at the parish school, entered St. Joseph's University, then St. Joseph's College, to pursue further studies and in due course was graduated from the Memramcook institution after a splendid record. Among his classmates were compatriots who rose to be leading figures in the clerical and public life of their native province, including Right Rev. Monsignor John Hebert, V.G., and Very Rev. Desire F. Leger, noted Canadian historian both now retired from the priesthood and resident at St. Joseph's Home in Shediac, also the late Sir Pierre A. Landry, first Acadian to occupy the position of Chief Justice of the King's Bench Division of the Supreme Court of New Brunswick; the late Hon. Senator Pascal Poirier, first Acadian appointed to the Senate at Ottawa, the late Placide Gaudet, for many years an archivist at Ottawa and others. After graduation from college, the late Mr. Leger became school teacher in his native place here and carried on his teaching duties for 28 years, when he retired to take up farming and became on of the leading and most successful agriculturalists in the Shediac district, owning a large, productive farm. He also contributed much to the public life of the community, being the advisor and friend of both old and young people. When matters in which the residents sought consultation, it was always to Mr. Leger that they turned and received freely and gratuitously of his advice. For many years he also filled the duties, of secretary of the board of School Trustees and was also a member of the board for a lengthy period. Public office in the wider domain never, however, appealed to him and he refused on various occasions representations to allow his name to be placed in nomination for the County Council and the Provincial House. His talents were also displayed for many years in the columns of newspapers of both languages, he being a fluent writer and his contributions to the press were highly interesting. For a lengthy period of time he corresponded for the Moniteur Acadien of Shediac, and L'Evangeline, of Moncton. In politics, he was a staunch Liveral and enjoyed personal acquaintance with the late Sir Wilfrid Laurier and the late Hon. H.R. Emmerson. He had also a great admiration for Rt. Hon. R.B. Bennett, often declaring to his friends that he was the most distinguished son New Brunswick ever gave to the public life of Canada. A man whose hospitality was boundless, the late Mr. Leger was a sterling type of citizen and one whose passing will be a distinct loss to the community.7
