Natif d’Atlanta, il était diplômé de la Briarcliff High School et du Wofford College. Il a également étudié au Schiller College en Allemagne et au Goethe Institute à Atlanta. Ses passe-temps comprenaient le canoë, en particulier à la maison familiale sur le lac Lanier, et la randonnée sur et autour de Stone Mountain.
