Hector Vincent (1928 - 2013)
Sutton - Hector J. Vincent, 85, of Millbury, formerly of Sutton, passed away peacefully in his daughter's Rutland, MA home, with his wife and family by his side, on Friday, October 25, 2013, after an illness.
He leaves his beloved wife of 63 years, Gloria T. (Allain) Vincent; four children: Thomas A. Vincent and his wife, Sandra, of Toccoa, GA, Marie E. Lawrence of Hudson, MA, David E. Vincent and his wife, Sharon, of Turner, ME, and Jean T. Sequist and her husband, John, of Rutland; nine grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; eight great grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. He held a very special place in his heart for his second cousin and snowplowing partner, Matthew Belsito.
He was predeceased by his parents, Armand and Lydia (Legere) Vincent and his sister, Yvette Ropiak and her husband, Edward.
Born in the Farnumsville village of South Grafton on May 25, 1928, he was raised there and graduated from Worcester Boys Trade High School in 1947 where he learned his trade of carpentry. Hector and Gloria were married in St. James Catholic Church in South Grafton on September 4, 1950, and they lived in Sutton for 50 years before moving to Millbury in 2012. After moving to Sutton, they became members of Assumption Catholic Church, Millbury.
Hector worked as a self-employed contractor until 1970 when he went to work for his cousin, Robert Belsito, at IBA in Millbury. He worked there for Robert and his son, Daniel, until he retired in 1993 after 23 years of dedicated service.
Hector built his own home from the ground up in 1960 and continually made additions and remodeled the house over the years. He was a superb finish carpenter and a perfectionist in every sense of the word. He could do anything with his hands. In addition to his carpentry, he did electrical work and plumbing and his landscaping skills were extraordinary. He would not sit still and was always building some sort of gadget or contraption to use around the house. He could and would fix anything; sometimes he would fix things that weren't even broken to improve them. In his spare time, he would help anyone with a home project. Many who knew Hector still point to work he performed in their home and marvel at the workmanship.
Hector and Gloria enjoyed traveling, spending time with their grandchildren, and quiet time together at home. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Hector's Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, October 29, in Saint James Catholic Church, 89 Main St., South Grafton. Those wishing to attend the Mass are requested to go directly to the church. Burial in Fairview Cemetery, South Grafton, will follow the Mass. Calling hours at Turgeon Funeral Home, 56 Main St., Millbury, will be Monday, October 28, from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M.
