FITCHBURG -- Donat N. Descarreaux, 85, of 49 Kimball Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester.
Born April 10, 1913, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he was the son of Albert and Yvonne (Campbell) Descarreaux. He had lived most of his life in Fitchburg.
Mr. Descarreaux was a welder for many years at the former San-Vel Corp., Littleton. He retired in 1978.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Church and the St. Joseph Club, where he was a member of the chess club during the 1980s and early 1990s. He was a former member of the U.S. Chess Federation and the Massachusetts Chess Association. An avid golfer, he was a member of Monoosnock Country Club in Leominster.
He leaves a son, Norman Descarreaux of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two daughters, Karen A. Morand-Hunt of Fitchburg and Yvonne T. Leger of Leominster; a brother, Norman Descarreaux of Fitchburg; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
His wife, Aurelie (Arsenault) Descarreaux, died in 1993. A brother, Raymond Descarreaux, died in 1992.
A funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 49 Woodland St.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Friday night from 6 to 9 at the Louis M. Isabelle Funeral Home, 316 Clarendon St.
