BIRD, Gerald Lester -
79, West Leicester, died Saturday, December 31, 2005, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst. Born in West Leicester, he was a son of the late Ira and Marlon (Chapman) Bird. For many years Gerald worked at Enheat in Amherst retiring in 1988. He ran his own farm and bred horses, which he entered in harness racing throughout the Maritimes. He was a member of Oxford Pioneer Heritage Club and was an honourary member of Leicester Fire Department. Gerald was a very talented musician, and was a long-time member of Russell Chapman's band, where he played for many old-time dances and nursing homes in Cumberland County. He enjoyed camping and going to bluegrass festivals. He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Rushton; son, Peter (Connie), Leicester; daughter, Anne (Doug Legere), Amherst; brother, William, Amherst; sisters, Connie Polakoff, Winnipeg, Man.; Gwen (Allison) Bell, Ottawa, Ont.; Betty Ann (Roger) Babineau and Natalie (Arnold) Siddall, both of Amherst; grandchildren, Amanda and Linda Bird; brothers-in-law, Marsh Fox and Hamp Lewis, both of Amherst; sister-in-law, Ethel Mitchell, Amherst. He was predeceased by his daughter, Katherine; brother, Alvin; sisters, Frances Lewis, Audrey Fox and June Dodge. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, in MacDiarmid's Funeral Home, 5075 Main St., Oxford (447-2930). A private family burial will take place at a later date.
