FITCHBURG -- Rachel J. (Croteau) Desmarais, 94, of Nashoba Park, Ayer, formerly of Milk St. and The Joseph House, in Fitchburg died in Health Alliance Leominster Hospital after an illness.
She was born on September 19, 1913, in St. Agnes, Lake Magantic, Canada the daughter of Clement and Melvina (LeClerc) Croteau and lived in Fitchburg for most of her life . She was living at Nashoba Park Assisted Living in Ayer for the past year.
She had been a supervisor for seven years a The Village Rest Home before her retirement in 1972. She loved to travel and for more than 25 years she had spent her winters in New Port Richey, Fla.
She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends especially Scat and Frustration. She had been a volunteer at her church for many flea markets and other events and activities for many years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She most enjoyed precious time with her grand and great grandchildren and also loved cooking for her family. She was also a member of The Association Canado-Americaine.
She leaves her son, Donald E. Desmarais and wife, Carole, of Templeton; her daughter, Joanne M. Buckley of Port Richey, Fla; her two sisters, Sister Clemence Croteau of The Daughters of the Holy Spirit, stationed at the Mother House in Putnam, Conn., and Antoinette and her husband, Donald Leger, of Fitchburg; eight grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
Her husband, Ernest Desmarais, died in 1983. She is pre-deceased by her, brothers, Ovila, Albert, Theodore, Romeo, Paul, and Athur Croteau and her sisters Mirange, Clara, Bertha, Jean, and Bella.
DESMARAIS -- The funeral will be held on Wednesday Nov. 28, 2007, from the Lavery Chartrand & Alario Funeral Home 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church 58 Walnut St., Fitchburg with interment to follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fitchburg. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.
