FITCHBURG - Weikko W. "Jake" Leikkanen, 86, of 7 Valley St., formerly of Westminster, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 11, in Birchwood Care Center, after an illness.
He was born Sept. 12, 1911, in Fitchburg, the son of Kalle and Lempi (Hurula) Leikkanen, and had attended Fitchburg High School. He moved to Westminster many years ago, returning to Fitchburg in 1982.
Mr. Leikkanen was a machine operator at Simonds Saw & Steel Co. for 26 years. He retired in 1976.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern theater.
Mr. Leikkanen enjoyed baseball and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
He leaves two daughters, Mary A. Leger of Westminster and Ann L. Glode of Marlborough, Conn.; a sister, Helvi M. Leikkanen of Fitchburg; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
His wife, Agnes C. (Furlong) Leikkanen, died in 1976.
After cremation, a memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Westminster Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 123 Main St.
Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery, Westminster.
