Death Claims Businessman, J. P. LeBlanc -
A lifetime's link with business in Moncton was severed yesterday noon in the passing of Joseph P. LeBlanc, president of Moncton Beverages Limited, and prior to that a member of the firm of White's Grocery which was long a landmark in the business area of Main Street, between Robinson and Lutz. Mr. LeBlanc passed away in hospital here following a relapse he suffered on Sunday when his condition had been showing improvement after a period of treatment for an illness that had periodically affected him since August last. His death will come as a distinct shock to his many relatives and friends in his native city as well as throughout the province. Born in Moncton 61 years ago, deceased was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip LeBlanc, his father being a well known C.N.R. shops employee. He was educated in the city schools and after graduation entered the service of White's Grocery, which was founded by his mother and successfully conducted by her until her death some years ago. He afterwards operated the business for a time, then taking over Atlantic Beverages, Limited, a wholesale firm, upon the death of his younger brother, Henry, and in which he continued to direct its activities until his demise. He was a former member of the Retail Merchants Association and of the Moncton Board of Trade. The late Mr. LeBlanc also had a lifetime association with various branches of sport in the city, particularly hockey and he was one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the Moncton Hawks, Allen Cup champions in the mid-thirties. He also gave staunch backing to the promotion of junior and intermediate hockey in the city. A devout Roman Catholic, he was a foremost member of the laity of L'Assomption Cathedral and always took a deep and active interest in all parochial affairs. In fraternal circles he was a charter member of Moncton Council No. 1310, Knights of Columbus and, also of the Fourth Degree Assembly. He also held memberships in L'Assomption Society and the Artisans Society. Deceased leaves to mourn his wife, the former Miss Perina Leger of this city, who is the dean of Moncton Board of School Trustees; one son, Louis, associated in business with his father, and two daughters, Rev. Sister Theresa of the Missionary Order of the Immaculate Conception, Montreal, and Beradette, bookkeeper at Atlantic Beverages Limited. There is also one sister, Mrs. Albenie M. Richard, Lutz street, city. Rev. Sister Theresa arrived home yesterday afternoon, having been summoned on account of her father's critical illness but to which he succumbed a few hours previous to her arrival. The body is resting at the family residence, 367 Lutz street from where the funeral will take place on Friday morning to L'Assumption Cathedral for solemn high; mass of requiem at nine o'clock. Afterward's, the cortege will proceed to Shediac Road cemetery where the remains will be placed in the vault until spring when interment will be made.
