Olive M. O'Leary (Benshoof) Leger, 89 FITCHBURG -
Olive Mae (Benshoof) O'Leary Leger, 89, of Fitchburg, MA, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, in Golden Living Center, after a brief illness. She was born on February 24, 1921, in Boone, Iowa, the daughter of William and Anna (Munson) Benshoof, and was raised in Boone. She attended and graduated from Boone High School in 1939. She had lived in Fitchburg, MA for the past 62 years. Olive worked as a sales clerk for over 25 years at the former Woolworth's and Grants Dept. Stores on Main St., Fitchburg, MA, retiring in 1984. She kept very active in several organizations. She was the secretary for the Amvets Post 29 in Fitchburg, a past president for the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aux., treasurer of the Golden Age Club, a volunteer for the Fitchburg Public Library, a member of the Friends of Coggshall Park, she was on the board of Directors for the Daughters of Isabella, a volunteer for the Food Bank of Fitchburg, and was active in the Cub Scouts, and served as a scout leader. She was a former member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Fitchburg, MA. She is survived by her four sons, Michael W. O'Leary of Ft. Lauderdale Florida, John G. O'Leary and his wife, Jo-Ann of Fitchburg, MA, Timothy H. O'Leary and fiancée, Sandra Deming of Lunenburg, MA, and Daniel S. O'Leary and his wife, Karen of Ipswich, MA; two daughters, Judith and her husband, Eric Normandin and Eileen and her husband, Kent Bourgault, both of Fitchburg, MA; 13 grandchildren, Jon, Megan, Jeffrey, Tracy, Shaun, Jason, Patrick, Sarah, Benjamin, Marcy, Hayley, Mark, and David. She also leaves 13 great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her first husband, George O'Leary in 1984, her second husband, Joseph "Jerry" Leger in 2002, and her dear friend and companion, Earl Spare in 2007. She was also predeceased by her brother, William Benshoof of Boone, Iowa in 1995.
LEGER -- A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at 11 a.m. in St. Bernard Parish at St. Camillus De Lellis Church, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg, MA. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. A calling hour will be held Tuesday morning at the funeral home from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. The Lavery Chartrand & Alario Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, MA, is directing the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to: The Friends of the Public Library and left at the funeral home.
