Ombudsman C. E. Leger Laid to Rest -
New Brunswick's second ombudsman, Charles Edouard Leger, QC, of Moncton, was laid to rest Monday following requiem high mass at Assumption Cathedral Mr. Leger died at Dr. Georges L. Dumont Hospital Saturday at the age of 62. Nearly 1000 people attended the funeral. Eulogy was Given by Rev. Clement Cormier, chancellor of the University of Moncton. Msgr. Donat Chaisson, Archbishop of Moncton, celebrated the mass, assisted by Rev. Camille Leger, a brother of the deceased, Rev. Camille Johnson, parish priest of Assumption Cathedral, and Rev. Alphonse Leger, a cousin, and Father Cormier. Co-celebrants were Rev. Yvon LeBIanc, Msgr. Leonard Leger, Rev. Medard Daigle, Rev. Hector Leger, Rev. Arthur Gallant, Rev. Clarence Leger, Rev. Paul Breau, Rev. O'Neil Ferguson, Rev. Yvon Barrieau, Rev. Alban Thibodeau, Rev. Donatien Gaudet, Rev. Oscar Melanson and Rev. Yvon Arsenault. Also taking part in the ceremony was Rev. J. A. Secord, representing Rt.-Rev. Harold Nutter, Anglican Bishop in Fredericton. Organist for the service was Dr. Felix Bertrand, Rev. Yvon LeBlanc and Sister Martina LeBlanc sang. Among those attending the service were Lt-Gov. Hedard Robichaud and Mrs. Robichaud. Premier Richard Hatfield, Opposition Leader Robert Higgins, House Speaker William Woodroffe, Economics Growth Minister Paul Creaghan, Provincial Secretary Omer Leger, Cleophas Leger (L - Westmorland), Arthur Buck, (PC-L-Kent), J. F. Roussel (L-Restigouche), Joseph LeBlanc (L-Westmorland), C. B. Sherwood (PC-Kings), Malcolm McLeod (PC-Albert), and William McNevin (L-Westmorland). Also in attendance were Moncton City Councillors A. L. Galbraith and Leopold Belliveau and French consul Michel Ribordy and Mrs. Ribordy. Honorary pallbearers were Senator Calixte Savoie, Tourism Minister Jean Paul LeBlanc, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Adrian Cormier, President of the New Brunswick Bar Association John Palmer, QC. Sylvio Savoie, Eric Cormier, Arthur Gaudet, Lorenzo Bourque, Aurele Girouard, Superintendant Charles A. Fillion, RCMP Moncton and D. D. Cliff, Superintendent of RCMP, Fredericton, Active pallbearers were Arthur Girouard, Marc Andre Chiasson, Maurice Cormier, Charles A. Leblanc, Paul Eugene Leger and Paul Bourque. Interment was in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Chartersville.
