PAULIN, GILBERT J. "FRENCHY" -
The largely attended funeral of J. Gilbert "Frenchy" Paulin, a World War II Merchant Navy Veteran and husband of the late Alma (Basque) Paulin, was held on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 from Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, to Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by his son, Rev. Stanislas Paulin in both official languages. The Mass was concelebrated by, Most Rev. Robert Harris (Bishop), Most Rev. J. Edward Troy (Bishop Emeritus), Rev. Michael LeBlanc, Rev. Donald Savoie, Rev. John Mooney, Rev. Arnie Hachey, Rev. Donald Breen, Rev. Douglas McNeill, Rev. Kenneth Weir, Rev. Kevin Barry, Rev. Leo Sullivan, Rev. John Fraser, Rev. Ralph McQuade, Rev. Dr. P. Brian Hansen, Rev. Paul J. Doucet, Rev. Paul LeBlanc, Rev. William Phillips, Rev. Raymund Stack, Rev. Peter Bagley and Rev. Bill Elliot; assisting in the mass were the Senior Altar Servers of Holy Trinity -Parish. The lay reader was Gilberts niece & godchild Linda Girouard. Intentions were read by his brother Edmond Paulin. Rev. Donald Savoie read the Gospel and the Homily was delivered by Rev. Michael LeBlanc. Gilbert's grandson, Matthew Chamberlain was the pianist. He accompanied the soloist, Theresa Rogers who sang hymns in both official languages. The Prayers of Commendation were led by Most Rev. Robert Harris, Bishop. Members of the Knights of Columbus, Pere Alfred Landry Council # 13120, formed a Guard of Honour at the Church and also at the cemetery. The members of the Royal Canadian Legion held a Tribute to a Veteran Service at the funeral home on Monday evening. They also formed a Guard of Honour at both the church and the cemetery along with members of the Merchant Marines. Elsie Wayne, a former member of parliament, was present in the congregation & part of the Honour Guard. The honourary pallbearers were, Onesime Paulin, Gerard Paulin, Hormisdas Basque and William "Micky" Pothier. The active pallbearers were, Gilberts Grandchildren, Danielle Legere, Jason Chamberlain, Adam Legere, Jill Boyle, Michelle Wilband and Danny Wilband. Among the numerous floral and spiritual tributes received by the family were those from, Conseil Pastoral du Carrefour, Beausoleil, Parishioners and Staff of St. Rose and St. Brendan's Churches and Staff of Davidson's Funeral Home. Donations in memory of Frenchy were made to, Holy Trinity Church Building Fund; Palliative Care Unit of Saint John Regional Hospital, including those from Saint John Marine Pilots and The Latimore Lake and Area Community Association Inc.; Christopher Court Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund; P.R.O. Kids Sports; Canadian Cancer Society including one from Saint John Federal Liberal Association; Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick including one from Management and Staff of Cavanaugh Funeral Home; Branch # 53 R.C.L East Saint John; St. John the Baptist Church Building Fund; Cedar Hill Field of Honour including one from Portland Branch # 64 R.C.L.; Romero House-Soup Kitchen including one from Staff of Raymond's Meats, Saint John City Market; L'Arche Saint John; and St. James' Lakewood Church. Interment took place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, with prayers at the grave by his son, Fr. Stanislas Paulin and Fr. Michael LeBlanc. A Reception followed at Holy Trinity Parish Hall.
