Norwich - Robert W. Belliveau Sr., 78, formerly of Prospect Street Norwich, died Monday at the Norwichtown Rehabilitation and Care Center in Norwich.
He was born in Norwich on Feb. 20, 1928, son of the late Edgar J. and Mary M. (Ryan) Belliveau. Robert worked most of his life as an inspector for the Electric Boat Co. in Groton. He graduated from the Norwich Free Academy Class of 1946.
He was a longtime communicant of St. Mary's Church in Norwich, where he was a choir member and a Eucharistic Minister; he also ministered to the shut ins for St. Mary's Church. Bob was a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Belliveau loved to sing, and he belonged to the Norwich Barbershoppers for many years. He taught himself to play piano and enjoyed acting with the Community Theater. Bob was a member of the Norwich Rose City Senior Center. He was an avid gardener and loved to paint.
On Sept. 12, 1980 Bob was united in marriage to Jacqueline M. Desjardins at St. Mary's Church in Norwich. Mrs. Belliveau died on March 8, 2003. Mr. Belliveau was predeceased by his first wife Rebecca, who died July 4, 2002.
Bob was predeceased by two brothers, Fr. Norbert Belliveau and Edward Belliveau, and one sister, Margaret Leblanc.
Mr. Belliveau is survived by two sons, Robert W. Belliveau Jr., of Westerly, R.I., and Norbert A. Belliveau, of Northampton, Mass.; five daughters, Christine M. Jenkins, of Norwich, Sallie E. Wieiberg, of Uncasville, Mary Scibilia, of Westerly, and Joslynne Belliveau and Rebecca Ann Herman, of Florida; four brothers, John Belliveau, of Norwich, Thomas A. Belliveau, of Fitchville, Clarence J. Belliveau, of Middletown, and Michael J. Belliveau, of Colorado; two sisters, Marie Oloff, of Groton and Irene Perkowski, of Colchester; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one step daughter, Dianne Reguin, of Colchester; three stepsons, Dennis Lanoux, of Norwich, Joseph Raymond Lanoux, of Norwich and Gerard Lanoux, of Gales Ferry; numerous nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
He was loved very much and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. A special thanks to the staff at Norwichtown Rehabilitation and Care Center for their loving care they gave to Bob.
The funeral will assemble on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Cummings-Gagne Funeral Home, 82 Cliff Street, Norwich and proceed at 1:45 to a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church in Norwich. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Norwich. Calling hours are at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
