Informations biographiques

John M. Brown, one of the most respected and valuable citizens of this town, passed away on Friday morning at his home here in his 78th year. Although in impaired health for some time, the end came rather unexpectedly. About a year ago he rallied out of a very severe shock and we had all expected him to pull through this last one.

Mr. Brown was born in Fort Kent but moved to Eagle Lake with his parents when he was a young boy. Schools were few and far between in this region at that time but, like the great Lincoln, he spent his spare time in the early years at the fireside with whatever books there were in the home or could be borrowed, and there secured a fund of knowledge which was later placed at the service of his fellow-men. His wide range of reading and experience made him familiar with public affairs and he was able to give a person much information along many lines. The door of his office was always open to all who wished to secure his advice in business or personal matters, and his great personality, ready wit, and retentive memory made of him a brilliant conversationalist, which endeared him to all who had occasion to meet him.

When a young man he learned surveying and was employed in that capacity in nearly every section of the county. Later he was appointed postmaster in this town and held that position for thirty consecutive years. He was enrolled as a member of the Commercial Law League, served the community as Trial Justice and Notary Public for a long term of years, acted as agent for the American Surety Co., and treasurer of the Town Ministerial School Fund. He was the representative for owners of wild lands in this section. He held the office of first selectman for five years, relinquishing this position at the time of his first illness last year. In politics, he was a strong Republican, a great admirer of Teddy Roosevelt, and acted as chairman of the local committee. To all these various activities, he gave his time unsparingly and discharged his manifold duties and responsibilities with efficiency and promptness.
