Pierre Joseph Léger (n. 27 jan 1886, d. 10 mai 1963)

Informations biographiques

Mrs. Leger spent her entire lifetime here and contributed greatly to the cultural growth of the community as well as in many other ways.

Mrs. Leger graduated in music from Mount St. Vincent Academy, Halifax, and was an accomplished violinist. In addition to donating her talent to various local forms of entertainment for many years, she helps provide the musical background for silent movies.

She and her husband were pioneer promoters of the motion picture industry here and together they operated the town's only theatre for over 40 years. First known as the Opera House, it was later renamed the Capitol Theatre.

Mrs. Leger encouraged and supported every worthwhile activity in the community and lent moral, physical and financial support to innumerable endeavours designed to improve the betterment of her birthplace and the well-being of her fellow-citizens.

Mrs. Leger's many affiliations included Nicolas Denys Chapter IODE, and Bathurst Golf Club (Gowan Brae), and she was a charter member of both these organizations. She was largely instrumental in founding the local branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). She attended First United Church and was a strong supporter of the Canadian Association for the Mentally Retarded, the Canadian National Institution for the Blind (CNIB), and the Bathurst Community Concert Association. On the provincial level, Mrs. Leger was a patron of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton.

Although Mrs. Leger has no family of her own, she was greatly devoted to a number of nephews and nieces. She was widely known for her concern for the less fortunate and untold numbers benefited from her kindness and generosity.

Pleasant of manner and attractive in appearance, Mrs. Leger was always among the city's foremost hostesses and her home almost a continuous centre of hospitality. Her death marks a distinct loss to the city, but she leaves fond memories and many monuments to a long, useful and benevolent life.4
