Joseph O. Babin
FITCHBURG -- Joseph O. Babin, 89, of Fitchburg, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 6, in Sterling Health Care, after an illness.
He was born on Dec. 28, 1915, in Scodouc, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Philias and Annie (Melanson) Babin and had lived most of his life in Fitchburg.
Mr. Babin had owned and operated Fitchburg Heating & Air Conditioning from 1959 until he retired in 1997.
He was a longtime member of Oak Hill Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf. He had previously been a member of Monoosnoc Country Club in Leominster. He also had loved to go skiing, and was a life member of Mt. Mansfield in Stowe, Vt. He was a member of the Sierra Club, the North Central Chamber of Commerce, the Cable Club and a past member of the Joseph P. Keating Knights of Columbus Council No. 99 in Fitchburg. He was a longtime faithful parishioner at Immaculate Conception Church.
Mr. Babin leaves three sons, William P. “Billy” and his wife, Lona Babin, of Fitchburg, Michael J. and his wife, Linda Babin, of Groton, and Gary R.J. and his wife, Kathleen Devine, of Millis; four daughters, Camilla C. Babin of Westminster, who was also his caregiver, Jacqueline M. Melanson of Fitchburg, Linda M. and her husband, Buddy Tackett, of Fitchburg, and Pauline M. Babineau of Leominster; four sisters, Genieva Richards of Stoneham, Exilda Allain in Moncton New Brunswick Canada, Yvonne Melanson of Moncton, New Brunswick,Canada, and Marie Gallant of Montreal, Canada; 12 grandchildren, Brian Babin of Miami, Fla., Melanie Hall of Templeton, Michael Melanson of Westminster, Kristine Melanson of Fitchburg, Michael Babin Jr. and Michelle Babin, both of Groton, Matthew Tackett of Savannah, Ga., Justin Tackett of Atlanta, Ga., Sarah Goieble of Chico, Calif., Joshua Tackett of Fitchburg, Angel Martinez of Concord, N.H., Kaitlin Babin-Devine and Payton Babin-Devine, both of Millis; his great-grandchildren, Brady Babin, Dominic and Lillie Hall, Alexandria Melanson, Amaya Alissa, Nomar Escobalas and Hunter and Haley Tackett, and several nephews and nieces. His wife of 67 years, Margaret M. (Leger) Babin, died in May of 2005. He was also predeceased by his son-in-law, Kenneth Melanson of Fitchburg; two grandsons, William P. Babin and Kenneth M. Melanson, both of Fitchburg; five brothers, Ustache, Emery, Leander, Oscar and Laurie Babin, all of Canada; and two sisters, Irene Woodruff and Alfreda Mandzwick.
BABIN -- On Dec. 6, Joseph O. Babin, 89, of Fitchburg. The funeral will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, from Lavery Chartrand & Alario Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg with a Mass of Christian Burial in Immaculate Conception Church, 58 Walnut St., at 10 a.m. Interment to follow in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
