Helen M. Melanson -
Helen M. (Lavoie) Melanson, 69, of New Athol Road, died on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at St. Vincents Hospital in Worcester following a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 6, 1944 in New Brunswick, Canada, she was a daughter of the late Edmond and Anna (Legere) Lavoie and grew up in New Brunswick, moving to the United States at the age of 18. On July 19, 1969, she married Leo Melanson at St. Pauls Church in New Brunswick and they have enjoyed over 44 years together. A resident of the greater Boston area for a number of years, Helen had worked as a manager at McDonalds in Davis Square in Somerville and previously had worked for Pemberton Farms in Cambridge. In 2008, Helen and Leo moved to Orange where they made their home at Pioneer Place on New Athol Road. An avid reader, Helen especially enjoyed reading on her Kindle. She also enjoyed summering at Old Orchard Beach in Maine, but most of, spoiling her granddaughter Brittany. Survivors include her beloved husband, Leo Melanson of Orange; a daughter, Rachel Porter and her husband, Dan ,of Orange; a son, Paul A. Melanson of Chicago, Illinois; a granddaughter, Brittany A. Porter of Orange; and siblings, Alyre Lavoir and his wife, Marie of St. Sosine, Ida Gallant of Riverview, Jeannine Doucette of St. Antoine, all in New Brunswick, Jeannette Leblanc, Ben Lavoie, Raymond Lavoie and his wife, Annette, Therese Richard and her companion, Armand, Stella Allain and her husband, Adeo, and Oscar Lavoie and his wife, Anise, all of St. Paul, New Brunswick, Robert Lavoie and his wife, Linda, of St. Antoine, Paul Lavoie and his wife, Joanne, of Fitchburg, Ronald Lavoie and Claudette Pellerin and her husband, Roger, all of St. Marie, New Brunswick. Besides her parents, Helen was predeceased by a sister, Emma Lavoie and a brother, Lionel Lavoie. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Wittys Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday morning, January 3, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Marys Church, 19 Congress Street, Orange, with Fr. Jose Bermudez officiating. Interment will be private.
