ASHBURNHAM -- Joseph C. Leger, 82, of Ashburnham, formerly of Westminster, died Saturday, March 10, in UMass Medical Center after a short illness.

He was born March 13, 1929, in Fitchburg, son of the late Anselme and Regina (Cormier) Leger. He served in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Sergeant with the 82nd Airborne, Ft. Bragg, NC. Mr. Leger was a Fitchburg firefighter for 26 years retiring in 1991 as a Lieutenant. Mr. Leger also worked as a plasterer. He was a member of Saint Joseph Church, the Saint Joseph Club, the American Legion, and the Fitchburg DAV where he served as Treasurer.

He enjoyed pigeon racing for 50 years, was an avid pool player, frequenting Foxwoods with his friends, and playing the lottery. He also enjoyed hunting, collecting antiques and brass animals, and was a tavern puzzle enthusiast but above all, he was a loving, HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDFATHER AND FRIEND.

He leaves his children, Holly Walsh and her husband Larry of Gardner, Susan Sherman and her husband Jerry of Royalston, Kelly Slater and her significant other Harry Halldow of Williamson, NY, Kimberly Hall and her husband Carleton of Ashburnham, and Gregory Leger and his wife Celina of Westminster; his grandchildren, Katie and Christopher Walsh, Joseph and Kristen Slater, Brittany and Erika Hall, Xavian Dean, and Emma Leger; his great-granddaughter, Makayla Slater; his sisters, Doris Legros, Lillian Richard, Bernadette Baldarelli, Pauline Bowen, Clarice Lomaglio; his sister-in-law, Lorraine Leger; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Eveline (Lawrence) Leger August 2, 2002. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Gerene LeBlanc, Lucille Cormier, and Ella Leger, and his brother, Ovila Leger.

LEGER -- The Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, March 15, at 10:00 A.M. in Saint Joseph CHURCH. Burial with military honors, will follow in Woodside Cemetery in Westminster.
